Kevin Looff scratch built an exact HO scale model of the Santa Fe Railway depot in Fort Madison, Iowa and has donated it to the North Lee County Historical Society. The HO Doodlebug, motorcar, is a Balboa Scale Model of the Santa Fe M-180 Class that ran from Fort Madison to Chicago in local passenger service painted by Steve Rippeteau.

A view of a portion of the CB&Q depot (the society's new temporary home) through the arches of the portico of the Santa Fe depot. A much smaller space, the "Q" as it is called, now holds a fraction of the artifacts formerly on display, but is a sunny airy space.

View of the portico where passengers waited for their train in nice weather, like this sunny day. Brick facade on the roof once held lettering that announced "Fort Madison." With luck, it will again.

The Division Freight Office stands beside a pedestrian bridge over the tracks of the mainline. The office was once home to a flood museum, but has served as the headquarters for the society.

Fort Madison's fourth Santa Fe depot was built in 1910. After being elevated more than four feet in the next two years, passenger service will be restored to this beautiful depot.

Santa Fe depot waiting room

These next three photos of the interior of the 1910 Santa Fe Railway depot in Fort Madison, Iowa may have been taken by a Santa Fe photographer right after the interior was remodeled. They are dated August 27, 1946. In another photo taken in January, 1946 of the ice jam flood the exterior of the bell tower is surrounded by scaffolding. So while we have yet to find a definite answer we believe that is the approximate date of remodeling. We also found evidence of a small fire in the attic around the interior wall of the bell tower that started from the baggage room wall. Could this have what prompted the Art Deco thin wall paneling with chrome trim? Are there any history detectives or photos of a depot fire out there? Comments are welcome.

This is the view you would have had coming into the Santa Fe Railway ticket office and waiting room in the 1910 depot in Fort Madison, Iowa. This was after the Art Deco remodeling of the interior walls of the waiting room in in the 1940 era.

Please note on this August day in 1946 the Santa Fe was running an advance section of the westbound California Limited chalked on as "Advance No. 3 Coaches Only".
