Santa Fe Depot today

This is what the depot looks like now as Amtrak No.4 from Los Angeles cruises by en route to Chicago. This photo was taken April 28, 2009 by volunteer Steve Rippeteau. Plans are being made to elevate the Santa Fe Depot complex so that Amtrak can use the Historic 1910 Depot waiting room without being subjected to repeated flooding of the Mississippi River. The current Amtrak depot is a leased waiting room from the BNSF located at 20th Street just over a mile west. That depot, built in 1968, is now subjected to repeated flooding.

Please note that the BNSF Railway mainline has been elevated some 5 feet above the original level in 1910 in order to keep the trains running during high water. In 1913 a hydro electric dam with locks was constructed and in the last 97 years the river levels have continued to increase with our modern technology of attempting to control the Mississippi River.
